Therefore, it can be said that beauty lies in work. It can also be said that the function and beauty of work are one and the same. Why are simple and uncomplicated things beautiful? The answer can be that it is because they are suited to work.
From "Beauty of Use" by Yanagi Muneyoshi
A nine-inch Shijira silk kimono dyed in a circular pattern by Professor Yanagi So.
I'm sure many of you are familiar with this work. Takashi Yanagi's dyed obi has been featured in beautiful kimono and books several times (although in different colors). I myself, as the writer of this article, first saw it in print and was so captivated by its beauty that I had longed to get my hands on it someday.

At first glance, you'll fall in love with the color, titled "Green and Ink," but you'll only truly appreciate it once you wear it. Made from domestic silk, the thread is twisted in the workshop using a twisting machine and then handwoven. In other words, the obi is woven with meticulous attention to detail, right down to the way it looks when you touch it and wear it. The color is achieved using a combination of plant and chemical dyes, with the ultimate focus being on the beauty of the final color.

"The awesomeness of accepting others"
That's the impression I get from this obi. It certainly has a presence, but it doesn't overwhelm others, it embraces and makes the most of them... I think that's also connected to the folk art philosophy I quoted at the beginning. It's only when you coordinate it with other kimonos that it really comes into its own, bringing out the best in the kimono you're wearing and highlighting the wearer, that its amazing flexibility is truly remarkable.

Of course, they are beautiful as obi. However, they are not woven to be appreciated, nor are they woven as obi that can be owned and left as such. It is clear that they have nothing to do with simply creating something that looks pretty.

Professor Yanagi Takashi's father was Yanagi Yoshihiro, who was also a dyeing and weaving artist, and Yoshihiro was the nephew of Yanagi Muneyoshi, the founder of the Mingei Movement. Yoshihiro learned from various dyeing and weaving production areas and developed his own unique style of "dyeing and weaving." Many of the famous dyeing and weaving artists who are active today have graduated from Yoshihiro's workshop.

Takashi Yanagi can be said to be at the origin of modern "dyeing and weaving," where an individual is particular about thread and dye, and expresses himself through weaving techniques. His works are rare, and he does not produce many pieces. This design could be said to be his masterpiece, and we hope you will take this opportunity to pick it up.

About pearl tone processing

*Please allow an additional week for delivery.

The pearl tone processing penetrates into each and every fiber, repelling moisture like beads.
It is resistant to dirt and even if it does get dirty, it is easy to clean.
Unlike waterproof processing that applies a membrane, this processing does not lose the original texture, luster, and breathability of the fabric, maintaining the original comfort of the kimono.
It also has the effect of preventing mold growth, so if you process it at the beginning, you can save on maintenance costs later.
