The beauty of the intersecting floating weave and the rich color scheme created by plant dyes
Kouka Senshoku, a workshop located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture
Yokouchi Kayoko and Yoshima Mitsuko are the two who create everything from plant dyeing to hand weaving.
We have written an article about our tour of the workshop on the official Kimono Kureha blog, so please take a look.
We have had a special relationship with Mitsuyoshi Dyeing and Weaving, who have produced a special order item for our store.
It is woven using threads that are associated with the region.
Our main store, Kimonoya Sonehara, is located in Okaya City. Okaya City is also home to the Miyasaka Silk Mill, the only place in Japan where silk is reeled by hand. For this production, we used reeled thread (thread reeled by hand from cocoons) from the Miyasaka Silk Mill.
Weave: Yoshino lattice
"Yoshino Mado" is a striped pattern woven by floating threads. Horizontal stripes are called Yokoyoshino, and vertical stripes are called Tateyoshino, but this is a "Yoshino lattice" weave in which Mado intersects vertically and horizontally.
Yoshino is known for its "plain weave" of thick threads, which creates stripes called "megane" (spectacles). This is an artistic aspect of weaving, where stripes of different thicknesses cross each other vertically and horizontally, creating large and small "spectacles."
In the "glasses" area, the width of the voluminous stripes curves and widens, causing the balance of the surrounding warp and weft threads to become unstable. The countless intersections of the grid are regulated by delicate weaving, resulting in a masterpiece of outstanding technical skill.
The delicate lines of Yoshino lattice are beautiful. You will be captivated by the delicate technique, but when you look at it from above, you will also notice the "power of the lines." It is a woven work of art that is made up of an exquisite sense.

Upon closer inspection, the intricate weave is captivating, but at first glance, it's a harmonious lattice pattern. This historically beloved lattice pattern has been reinterpreted with a modern sensibility for lines and colors.
Amazingly, the horizontal stripes have no pattern (the same arrangement is repeated), and continue in exquisite harmony like modern jazz improvisation. It's like witnessing some kind of magic.
Plant dyeing
Dyes used: Shibuki, Yaguruma, and Indigo
The whitish-brown base color is dyed with the bark of astringent trees.
The gray in the horizontal stripes is cornflower fruit.
The shades of grey are achieved by pre-dyed yarns. A calculated number of warp threads are resist-dyed and dyed with natural dyes to create different shades of grey, then precisely arranged in a horizontal stripe pattern.

This is only natural as the arrangement of the weft threads is different, but despite the same color scheme, the appearance of the three colors (dark gray, light gray, and whitish brown) is surprisingly different for each.
You can enjoy changing the atmosphere depending on the pattern that appears on the drum.
The latticework is also dyed with shibugi, yaguruma, and indigo.
The "yellow" slightly to the right of the center has a divine feel to it, but this color is produced by using alum as a mordant on astringent wood. The interesting thing about plant dyeing is that even with the same astringent wood, if you use lye or iron as a mordant, the base color becomes whitish-brown.
The "green" is dyed by layering astringent wood and indigo.
A complex grid of varying line thicknesses and multiple colors would normally give a scattered impression, but the sense of unity and harmony that this work has is probably due to the fact that the source of the colors is narrowed down to "Yaguruma, Shibuki, and Indigo."
The secret to bringing together the delicate Yoshino lattice into a work of art may lie in the way the three natural elements change shape and sometimes mix together to create the colors.
thread
Mitsuyoshi Dyeing and Weaving values the natural luster of hand-pulled thread. The natural "sway" that occurs when the thread is hand-pulled from the cocoon is what gives it its luster.
The warp threads of this obi are hand-pulled, and the weft is made of hand-pulled "dupioni" threads. The plain areas have the "small knots" that dupioni threads have. This gives the obi a texture that evokes the fundamental simplicity of dyed weaving.
It may seem rude to explain only the technical difficulties of a work, but weaving dupioni threads into the fine vertical Yoshino weave increases the possibility of snagging, making it more difficult to weave. This also shows that the image of the work comes first, and that perfection takes priority.

About pearl tone processing
About pearl tone processing
*Please allow an additional week for delivery.
The pearl tone processing penetrates into each and every fiber, repelling moisture like beads.
It is resistant to dirt and even if it does get dirty, it is easy to clean.
Unlike waterproof processing that applies a membrane, this processing does not lose the original texture, luster, and breathability of the fabric, maintaining the original comfort of the kimono.
It also has the effect of preventing mold growth, so if you process it at the beginning, you can save on maintenance costs later.
