A wonderful experience through kimono

Wearing a kimono.

Unlike clothes

Japanese clothing is a combination of kimono and obi, which are basically woven fabrics with the same shape.
That is why the ingenuity of the materials, dyeing and weaving, and design is so appealing.

And the way you wear it creates style and brings out the wearer's individuality.

The deep world of kimono can sometimes be confusing.
However, the way the clothes are coordinated, where the worldviews of the maker and the wearer overlap, gives an irreplaceable sense of exhilaration.

A lifestyle where kimono is an option.
Such a wonderful experience may have the power to bring about change, not only for the wearer, but also for those around them.

We will serve as your guide to experience the beauty of kimono.

Promoting Shinshu dyeing and weaving crafts from Suwa

Kimonoya Sonehara has been operating a kimono business in the Suwa region of Nagano Prefecture for 68 years (2022) since its founding by the previous generation.

As a kimono shop located in Okaya City, which once thrived as a silk-reeling industry, we produce original kimonos and custom-made items using thread from Miyasaka Silk Mill, the only company in the country that hand-pulls thread from cocoons.

Furthermore, if we look at Shinshu as a whole, it is one of the leading tsumugi (pongee) producing areas in the country, and the culture of plant dyeing and hand weaving is still alive today.

We will introduce you to fascinating workshops and artists. We will also make suggestions in the field of crafts that overlap with Japanese clothing.

Shinshu Dyeing and Weaving <br>The Matsumoto City workshop ``Kouka Dyeing and Weaving'' is located in the midst of a major trend in Shinshu dyeing and weaving.

This workshop is run by two people who learned dyeing and weaving under Takafumi Hongo, who was taught by Yoshihiro Yanagi, a master in the dyeing and weaving world and nephew of Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement.
